What a civil engineer's laptop needs
Questions people ask
Which laptop is best for civil engineering students?
A Core i5 H-series or Core i7 laptop with 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD and an RTX 3050 or RTX 4050 covers AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, Revit and ETABS for all four years. Choose 16 GB over a bigger GPU if the budget forces a trade-off.
Do I need a graphics card for AutoCAD and STAAD Pro?
STAAD Pro and 2D AutoCAD run fine on integrated graphics. Civil 3D, Revit and rendering in Lumion or Twinmotion need a dedicated card. If your course or job includes 3D and BIM, get one now rather than upgrading later — laptop GPUs cannot be upgraded.
Is 8 GB RAM enough for civil engineering software?
It is the minimum most vendors list, but analysis models and large drawings will swap to disk. 16 GB is the practical minimum; several laptops here can be upgraded to 32 GB in store.
Which is better for a civil engineer: Dell, Lenovo or Asus?
All three make suitable machines. Dell Precision and Lenovo ThinkPad P-series are certified for engineering software; Asus TUF and Lenovo LOQ give more GPU per rupee for students. We will compare two in the store.
