What a student actually needs under ₹40,000

A student laptop has to survive four years of classes, notes, online lectures, MS Office, a browser with twenty tabs and, for engineering students, some coding and a bit of MATLAB or AutoCAD. Under ₹40,000 you can get all of that — if you spend on the right things.

Prioritise an SSD (never a hard disk), 8 GB RAM minimum with 16 GB preferred, and a Full HD screen. A Core i3, Core i5 (older generation), Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5 is plenty. Do not pay for a touchscreen or a dedicated graphics card at this budget. Battery life and a decent keyboard matter more than a thin body.

Two paths work well at Karthik Computers: a new Acer Aspire, Lenovo IdeaPad, HP 15 or Asus Vivobook with full brand warranty, or a certified refurbished ThinkPad or Latitude that gives a business-class keyboard and build for the same money. Both come with a GST invoice, free shipping across India and EMI on cards. Parents in Chennai are welcome to bring the student to the store and try the machines.

Questions people ask

Which laptop is best for a college student under 40000?

For general degrees, a new Ryzen 5 or Core i5 laptop with 8–16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. For engineering, the same specs with 16 GB RAM, or a refurbished ThinkPad T-series for build quality. Ask us on WhatsApp with your course and we will shortlist two.

Is 8 GB RAM enough for a student?

It is enough for classes, Office and browsing. Choose a model with a free RAM slot so it can go to 16 GB later — we upgrade in store.

New or refurbished for a student?

If the student is rough with devices or needs a great keyboard, refurbished business laptops win. If you want the latest processor and a fresh brand warranty, buy new.

Do you offer student EMI?

EMI is on the card holder (usually a parent) and is available on most credit and debit cards. We will share the exact monthly amount for the model you choose.
