A college laptop that lasts the degree

For arts, science, commerce, management and most engineering courses, a college laptop needs to do the same things well for four years: online classes and lectures, notes and assignments in Office, a browser with many tabs, a few course tools and the occasional movie. It should be new with full brand warranty, light enough for the bag, and not so expensive that a loss hurts. This page lists new laptops under ₹55,000 with at least 8 GB RAM and an SSD.

A Core i3, Core 3 or Ryzen 3 with 8 GB is enough for most courses. Spend a little more for a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 and 16 GB if the course involves programming, statistics software or design tools — and see the engineering students page for CAD and simulation needs. Avoid hard-disk laptops entirely and avoid touchscreens unless you will actually use a pen. A 14-inch screen is the best balance of weight and usability for a student.

Karthik Computers has sold laptops to Chennai students since 2014. GST invoice, EMI on a parent's card, free shipping across India, and the store is open for you to try the keyboard before you buy.

Questions people ask

Which laptop is best for college students under 50,000?

A Core i5 or Ryzen 5 laptop with 8–16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD from Acer Aspire, Lenovo IdeaPad, HP 15 or Asus Vivobook. For non-technical courses a Core i3 with 8 GB is enough and cheaper.

Is 8 GB RAM enough for a college student?

Yes for classes, Office and browsing. Buy a model with a free RAM slot so it can go to 16 GB later if you take up programming or design.

New or refurbished for a college student?

New gives full brand warranty and the latest processor; a refurbished ThinkPad or Latitude gives a much better keyboard and build for the same money. This page lists new laptops; see the refurbished pages for the alternative.

Can I pay for a student laptop on EMI?

Yes. EMI is available on most credit and debit cards (usually a parent's), including no-cost EMI on selected banks. We share the monthly amount for the model you choose.
