Surge Protector for PC, TV & Home Office: What to Check Before You Buy

Surge protector or extension board: which is right for your PC and TV?

For a desktop PC, TV or home office, a random "multiplug" is not enough. You should know whether you are buying a simple extension board or a true surge protector, and how many outlets and USB ports you really need.

Below we explain what to read on the box – surge protection rating, outlets, USB ports, cord length and indicators – and use Honeywell boards available at Karthik Computers, Kovilambakkam as practical examples.

Surge protector vs plain extension board

Extension boards like the Honeywell Value 4-Outlet or 5-Outlet simply give you more sockets and cable reach from one wall point. They are useful for TV units, routers, speakers, chargers and light office devices, but they are not designed to absorb voltage spikes unless the manufacturer clearly says "surge protection" with a Joules rating.

Surge protectors go one step further. Models like the Honeywell Platinum Surge Cube or the Honeywell Value 4-Outlet and 8-Outlet Surge Protectors specify their surge ratings in Joules and Amps. This tells you they are meant to handle sudden spikes from lightning or grid issues better than a basic extension board.

If you are connecting a desktop PC, gaming console, high-end TV or router, a surge protector is usually the safer choice. For table fans, lamps or occasional chargers, a simple extension board is generally fine.

What to read on the box before you buy

1. Surge protection rating (Joules & Amps)

If the packaging lists a Joules value, it is a surge protector. For example, the Honeywell Platinum Surge Cube lists 255 Joules, while the Honeywell Value 4-Outlet Surge Protector is rated 525 Joules and 15,000 Amps, and the 8-Outlet Surge Protector goes up to 700 Joules and 20,000 Amp with 6KV max rating.

  • For basic routers or set-top boxes, even a lower Joule rating is better than none.
  • For a full PC or TV setup with multiple devices, a higher rating like on the 8-Outlet Surge Protector gives more headroom on paper.

2. Number of outlets and layout

Count how many plugs you actually need at one spot today and add a small buffer.

  • Single device, high importance: The Honeywell Platinum Surge Cube is ideal near a single desktop, TV or console where you want compact surge protection with USB charging.
  • 3–4 devices: Honeywell Value 3-Outlet or 4-Outlet extension boards work for small desks; the 4-Outlet Surge Protector adds surge safety.
  • Many devices around the TV or PC: The Honeywell Value 5-Outlet extension board gives you five sockets, while the 8-Outlet Surge Protector is designed for larger setups.

3. USB and Type-C charging ports

If you are always looking for spare mobile adapters, get a board with USB ports.

  • The Honeywell Value 3-Outlet Extension Board with 3 USB Ports combines three power outlets with three USB ports in one unit.
  • The Honeywell Value 3-Outlet and 4-Outlet boards with 1 Type-C & 2 USB-A are useful if you want direct USB-C and USB-A charging; their manufacturer-listed output goes up to 10W on each USB-A and Type-C port.
  • The Honeywell Platinum Surge Cube adds Type-C with PD20W plus a USB port, so it can charge compatible phones faster while still protecting one AC device.

4. Cord length and placement

All the Honeywell Value series boards here include a 2 m cord, and the surge protectors mention BIS-certified 2 m power cords. Measure the distance from your wall socket to where your PC, TV or table is kept – a 2 m cable usually covers a typical TV unit or desk in Indian homes without stretching.

5. Indicators and master switch

A master switch lets you cut power to all connected devices with one press. This is convenient for overnight shutdown and adds a simple manual safety layer.

  • The Honeywell Value 4-Outlet and 8-Outlet Surge Protectors specifically mention a master switch controlling all universal sockets.
  • When you unbox, check for any power indicators on the board and make it a habit to turn the master switch off when not in use.

Safety basics: earthing, high-load appliances and UPS

Proper earthing in the wall socket

A surge protector can only do its job properly if the wall socket is correctly earthed. In older houses, loose or fake earth pins are common. If you get tingling on metal parts, burning smells or frequent tripping, have a qualified electrician check the earthing before depending on any extension or surge board.

High-load appliances need their own wall sockets

Iron boxes, geysers, fridges, washing machines and AC units draw heavy current. Even if an extension board looks sturdy, it is safer to keep such high-load appliances directly on their own wall sockets unless the product explicitly mentions suitability for such use.

Use your Honeywell extension boards mainly for electronics and low-to-medium power devices: laptops, monitors, routers, speakers, chargers and similar loads.

A surge protector is not a UPS

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) keeps your PC or server running during a power cut for a few minutes so you can save work. A surge protector (or surge-protected extension board) mainly tries to absorb or divert sudden spikes; it does not provide backup power.

For a desktop used for work or trading, a practical setup is often a UPS plus a surge protector or a board plugged into the UPS output. For more details, you can also see our page on surge protector vs extension board.

Which Honeywell board is right for you?

  • Basic TV or router corner: Honeywell Value 4-Outlet or 5-Outlet Extension Board.
  • Bedside or study desk with phone and tablet: 3-Outlet or 4-Outlet Value boards with USB / Type-C ports to cut down on extra adapters.
  • Single high-value PC or TV: Honeywell Platinum 1-Outlet Surge Cube for compact protection plus PD Type-C charging.
  • Full PC + monitor + speakers + router setup: Honeywell Value 4-Outlet or 8-Outlet Surge Protector with master switch, depending on how many sockets you need.

Questions, answered

Is an extension board enough for a desktop PC?

For an expensive desktop PC, a surge protector with a clear Joules rating is usually a safer choice than a plain extension board, especially in areas with unstable power.

Can I plug my fridge or iron box into these extension boards?

It is better to keep high-load appliances like fridges, geysers, irons and AC units on their own wall sockets unless the product specifically states suitability for such loads.

Do surge protectors give backup power like a UPS?

No. Surge protectors try to absorb or divert voltage spikes but do not provide battery backup. A UPS is needed if you want your PC to stay on during power cuts.

Are USB and Type-C ports on extension boards safe for phones?

Use the USB and Type-C ports as per the manufacturer’s specifications, and avoid overloading the board or using damaged cables.

How do I know if my wall socket is properly earthed?

Common warning signs include frequent shocks, tingling on metal parts or tripping breakers. If you suspect issues, ask a qualified electrician to test and correct the earthing before relying on any extension or surge board.
